I’m sure you’ve seen this quote before:
You don’t make 100% of the shots you don’t take.
This quote exemplifies those who love to win. You love to win, so you play the game. You take the shots. You’ll miss some and you make some, but you keep playing because you love the feeling of making the shot.
You can’t lose 100% of the games you don’t play.
I made this quote up. Don’t quote me on it, because it’s a lame, loser-y quote. This quote epitomizes someone who hates to lose. No one can win everything. If you hate to lose, the safest thing is to not play. You can’t lose if you don’t play.
I tend to lean towards hating to lose more than loving to win. Neither are necessarily bad, but in entrepreneurial settings, hating to lose more than loving to win is calamitous. Last year, I spent 9 months on a project, never to launch, mostly because of my fear of losing. I am glad to have learned my lesson and move on.
I need to shift my mindset from “hate to lose” to “love to win.” I can’t be afraid of the failures. I need to embrace them and learn as much as I go. Time to take more shots.
